Family laws are a species of civil law and include matters pertaining to marriage, divorce, judicial separation, maintenance, adoption. Family laws are different for persons defined under law as “Hindus” (Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists and Jains) whereas they are different for Mohammedans and Christians. There has been a small explosion of sorts in matrimonial litigation over the last few years and at most places family courts have been set up to expedite the decision of such cases.
